Chapter 7

Giulio Andreotti was the leader of the Christian Democracy party and the Prime Minister when Italy hosted the World Cup finals after being acquitted of murder charges. He said other than the Punic Wars, during which I was too young. I have been blamed for everything in Italy.

Rome fell under the control of the papacy. Nicholas V pursued an architectural and artistic dream. The Roman poets Ovid, Virgil, and Livy named Rome the eternal city.

Hosts Italy beat Austria 1-0 in the Stadio Olimpico, Rome. Salvatore Schillaci headed in the winning goal from a corner kick. Giuseppe Giannini broke through and finished low into the left-hand corner to defeat the United States 1-0. A 2-0 win over Czechoslovakia put Italy on top of the group.
George Bush signed the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. Margret Thatcher was succeeded later in the year by John Major. 

England 1 Republic of Ireland 1


Paddy grabbed a couple of ferrets and walked down the garden looking for rabbits. The beautiful smell was forming a queue outside the restaurant.

Paddy remortgaged his house, broke into a savings account, and left for the Estadio St Paul in Cagliari. Gary Liniker bundled the ball into the back of the net. Kevin Sheddy equalized after getting on the end of a big hoof up the park by Pat Bonner.
Stuart Pierce had a free kick disallowed in a 0-0 draw with the Netherlands. Mark Wright scored with his head from a Paul Gascoigne free kick against Egypt.#

Cameroon 1 Argentina 0

Cameroon is known for its Makossa, Njang, and Bikuki music styles. Tankea Nou from the Bamileke region fought against the French colonial government, achieving independence. Paul Biya became the President of Cameroon. The rain forest in the south is where evergreen trees such as Mahogany ebony and sapell grow to over 200 feet high. Inhabitants include chimpanzees, baboons, screaming green and red monkeys, elephants, giraffes, lions, and pelicans.

Biyiks powerful header put Cameroon 1-0 up against Argentina. Roger Milla scored twice against Romania to book Cameroon a place in the knockout stage. 

 

Italy 2 Uruguay 0

The Black Shirts had over 100,000 members when the National Fascist Party marched on Rome. Italy wore black shirts against France and gave the fascist right-arm salute at the 1938 World Cup. Italy was one of the most successful teams in the history of the World Cup, having won three titles (1934, 1938, and 1982).
Roman ruins of Pompeii were excavated at the archaeological park. Lucio pulled over on his Vespa 150 to read a plaque.

Italy met Uruguay in the knockout stage at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Schillaci opened the scoring. Senna added the second.
 
Brazil 0 Argentina 1
 
The round of 16 exploded when Brazil played a 5-3-2 formation against Argentina and enjoyed the vast majority of possession. Argentina's counterattack allowed Maradonna to put Caniggia through on goal, and he went around the goalkeeper and won the match for Argentina 1-0. The fixture is considered to be one of the most beautiful games.
 
West Germany 2 Netherlands 1

The Netherlands had a talented team with Rudd Gullit, Marco Van Basten, and Ronald Kooman. The Dutch couldn't break the Enigma code. Quality goals by Klinsmann and Brehme put West Germany into the next round.
England met Cameroon in the quarter-final and went 1-0 up. However, Cameroon equalized from the penalty spot. Emanuel Ekeke put Cameroon 2-1 ahead. Gary Linker equalised for England. The game finished 2-2. 
 
Extra Time
 
Gary Linker scored from the penalty spot in extra time. England were in the Semi-finals.
 
Bob was reading a football magazine on the way to the Stadio Olimpico. The streets were empty. A lot of people were at home watching the box. Jack did not see the man, only the ball. Wolfgang Wibler scored the equalizer and made it two all. Gordon Banks caught the ball in his hands. The crowd thought it was all over. Geoff Hurst scored a hat trick. The referee blew the final whistle. Bobby and Nobby did a lap of honor around Wembley.
 
England 1 West Germany 1
 
Up next was England playing in white and West Germany playing in green for a place in the World Cup final. It was one of England's most important fixtures since 1966. Bobby Robson and Franz Beckenbauer led the teams out onto the pitch.
England didn't have Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton, Geoff Hurst, or Gordon Banks. They did have Linker, Waddle, Shilton, and Gascoigne. The game was delicately poised at 0-0 when Brehme's free-kick took a deflection and span over the top of Peter Shilton in goal. England's players' heads didn't go down, raw emotion took over, and Linker equalized for England.
 
Extra Time 
 
Chris Waddle hit the post in extra time. David Platt had a goal disallowed for offside before the final whistle and penalties. 
Gary Linker took the first penalty and slotted it away nicely. Brehme equalized for West Germany. Stuart Pearce blasted the ball down the middle of the goal and hit Bodo Illgner's legs.
The score was 4-3 to West Germany when Chris Waddle blasted the ball over the top of the bar. England were out of the World Cup. It was a night we will never forget for the rest of our lives.
 
World Cup Final 1990
 
The two most Controversial teams in the world met in the final. The crowd moaned and groaned throughout the game. It was the ugliest and most cynical match ever.  Argentina had two players sent off the pitch by the referee. West Germany won 1-0 from the penalty spot.
Argentina only had one shot on goal and became the first team not to score a World Cup final. Was this the beginning of the end of the beautiful game?

United States 1994

Chapter 8

Ian Coalface played football at Swansea City. During the war, he served in North Africa and Italy. On demobilization, he returned to his Accounts practice. He was selected to be the chairman of the football association. A new manager was needed to be appointed.

The public choice was Brian Clough. Ian Coalface was a conservative by nature and thought Brian Clough was too outspoken. Graham Taylor accepted the job.

John Major and the Conservatives were in power. Unemployment had risen to 2.5 million, and England failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup finals.

Bill Clinton was the leader of the Democratic Party and the 42nd president of the United States when the World Cup finals came rolling into town. House of Representatives impeached Andrew Johnson after Abraham Lincoln's assignment. President Lincoln wanted to bring the South back into the union after the Civil War. Johnson attempted to replace the secretary while Congress was not in session. 

Bill Clinton was the second President impeached for perjury and obstruction of justice.

Bill and First Lady Hillary attended the tournament's opening ceremony at Soldier Field. Chicago has a long history of organized crime and was the home of Al Capone.

Bolivia 0 Germany 1 :

Klinsmann scored the only goal of the game for Germany.

 

Detroit had the highest standard of living in the world. Automobile manufacturers began leaving the city for the suburbs, and bankruptcy took over.

United States 1 Switzerland 1

The United States met Switzerland in the Pontiac Silverdome stadium. Bregy"s free-kick opened the scoring for Switzerland. Wynalda equalized with a free-kick of his own.

Los Angeles

United States met Columbia in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena in front of 93,000 enthusiastic fans. Escobar's own goal put the United States one nil ahead. Stewart made it 2-0 shortly after halftime. Valencia pulled a goal back for Columbia in the last minute.

United States 0 Romania 1

Los Angeles made an estimated £620 million profit from the 15th World Cup finals. Tom Hanks won the best actor Oscar for his role in Forest Gump. Petresca scored the only goal of the game for Romania. The United States came third in the group.

Knock out stage

George Washington became the President of the United States after defeating General Charles Cornwallis at Yorktown. John Adams, a respected political philosopher, became the second president. Thomas Jefferson, the author of the 'Declaration of Independence' became the third.

Richard Nixon was a Republican who became the 37th president of the United States. He scaled down US involvement in the Vietnam War and was the only President to resign from office after the Watergate scandal.

Spain 3 Switzerland 0

Spain met Switzerland in the JFK stadium in Washington D/C. The referee was Mario Van der Ende from the Netherlands. The attendance was 53,000. Fernando Ruiz Hierro put Spain ahead, Luis Enrique scored from the penalty spot, and Mujika made it three.

 

California: Romania 3 Argentina 2.

Bran Castle is in the Transylvania Alps and is known to be the home of Count Dracula. Dumitresco opened the scoring. Batistutea equalised for Argentina. Haggis's draw-dropping goal made it 3-1. Balbo made it 3-2.

Dallas

Bison use their heads to uncover vegetation in the snow. Over 40 million buffalo roamed the great plains. By 1889, there were 541 buffalo left. Today there are 31,000. Saudi Arabia defeated Morocco and Belgium to reach the knockout stage. Then, Saudi Arabia met Sweden at the Dallas Cotton Bowl. Sweden went 2-0 ahead. Al-Gleshegan made the score 2-1. Andersson scored the third goal for Sweden.

San Francisco

The gold rush transformed San Francisco from a town into a large city. Immigrants arrived every month, abandoning their ships in the harbor and selling the timber.

United States.0 Brazil 1

There was a thriller in Stanford between Brazil and the United States. Romario played a through ball to Bebeto. His shot flew into the top of the net.

New York is the center of finance commerce, entertainment, media, fashion, and art. The Giants won the Superbowl in 1986 and 1990. Germany met Bulgaria at the Giants stadium in front of 73.000 fans. Lothar Matthaus opened the scoring. Stoickov equalised. Letchov got the winner. The holders were out of the competition.

Orlando

Paddy had the time of his life in the Walt Disney Castle. He put a couple of bottles of Guinness under the bed and fell asleep. Ireland met the Netherlands at the Citrus Bowl Stadium in Florida.

Bergkamp scored the first goal, and Jonk made it 2-0.

Quarter Finals

Ian Coalface left Washington and drove up to Boston. He was reading a book about American Independence. With all hands on deck, I can see a shipwreck tea thrown into the sea.

Melissha fought with rifles in their hands and caught a fleet in New Orleans. Tea was thrown into the sea, sailing from Canton to London and then onto Boston.

Italy met Spain in the Foxborough Stadium in Boston in front of 53000 supporters. The referee was Sandor Puhl from Hungary. Dino Baggio scored the first goal. Camenero equalized. Roberto Baggio scored the winner.

Texas

Jacqueline Kennedy was wearing her favorite pink Chanel suit in a motorcade when Lee Oswald shot J.F. Kennedy.

Netherlands 2 Brazil 3

Brazil met the Netherlands at the Cotton Bowl. Romario opened the scoring, and Bebeto made it 2-0. Berkamp pulled a goal back. Winter equalized for the Netherlands. Branco scored the winner.

Semi-Final

Bulgaria 1 Italy 2

Bulgaria has 6 satellite dishes in space including Bulgaria Sat-1. It offers broadband satellite communications and high-definition television facilities.

Roberto Baggio proved he was one of the best players in the world, scoring two brilliant goals against Bulgaria. The first goal was a cut-in from the right wing, and the second was a deadly finish from an acute angle inside the penalty box.

Stoickov pulled a goal back from the penalty spot.

Romario’s powerful header was the only goal of the game

 

World Cup Final

Brazil 0 Italy 0 After extra time.

Italian coach Arrigo Sacchi's philosophy was to defend. Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini stopped Dunga, Zinho, Bebeto, and Romario from scoring a goal in the World Cup final.

Penalties

Roberto Baggio was a genius with a ball. His penalty was a script from a Shakespeare tragedy. It flew high over the crossbar, and Italy lost the World Cup final.

The American public might have felt short-changed by the nil-nil World Cup final result. However, the competition was a financial success, with an average of 68,000 fans per game.



France 1998
